Corrie Bergeron Sr.

0000295862 01 1 005542 In Memoriam Corrie Bergeron Bergeron Sr., Corrie Jacobs 84, of Baton Rouge, LA, died May 1, 2010 in Lewisville, TX. Corrie Jacobs Bergeron, was born to St. Clair and Mathilda (nee Duplantis) on October 18, 1925 in Morgan City, Louisiana, in the heart of Cajun country. The son of a small-town grocer who lost his business in the Great Depression, Corrie would become a senior systems engineer for IBM and a respected local leader in the Boy Scouts of America. More than that, he was a beloved father and “grand-pere.” Corrie joined the Navy in the midst of WWII. He showed an aptitude for electronics and was sent to the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) for advanced training. When the war ended, Corrie enrolled at LSU in the Electrical Engineering program. After graduation in 1948, he was hired by IBM in Baton Rouge to repair “calculating machines” such as grocer’s scales and school clocks. Corrie was an avid fisherman, but his main hobby (apart from fishing and barbecuing) was as an amateur radio operator, a “ham,” call sign W5FOR. He always spelled it out using the old phonetic alphabet: “Whiskey Fife Fox Oboe Roger.” For many years his home contained a special-purpose room, the “radio shack,” with his wooden desk stacked high with Heathkit short-wave radio components that he built from plans. His homes in Houston and Dallas featured a tall antenna tower of galvanized steel. In 1951 he married Mary Grace Sessions, R.N., a Navy nurse and had 3 children: Catherine Mary was born in 1952, and Margaret Ann followed in 1953, In late 1961, Corrie, Jr. was born. His wife died in 1965 of cancer. Corrie married Drue Teddlie, a widow with two children, in 1968. In 1969 he was transferred to the Dallas IBM office and lived in Farmers Branch where their daughter, Andrea was born. Corrie became an adult Boy Scout leader and eventually completed training at Woodbadge and Phil-mont. He served as Scoutmaster of Troops 713 and 116 (which he co-founded). The couple divorced in 1977. In 1978 Corrie married Kathleen Kennedy Paddock who had 3 grown children. He retired from IBM in 1987, moving to Tyler, TX in order to be closer to their new fishing “camp” he’d bought on the shore of Lake Palestine, where they planned to spend their golden years together. They were also able to travel to Europe, Ireland and to do genealogical research in Nova Scotia. Tragically, Kathleen was diagnosed with cancer in 1993 and died in 1996. Shortly thereafter Corrie suffered a series of mini-strokes that left his memory impaired; by 1997 he was no longer able to live independently. At 6:40 AM on May 1, 2010 Corrie Jacobs Bergeron “sailed at break of day.” Whiskey Fife Foxtrot Oboe Roger had finally signaled, “over and out.” He is preceded in death by his first wife Mary Grace, brothers St. Clair John (“Jay”) and Samuel, and wife Kathleen. He is survived by sister Nedra Nesbit, former wife Drue Bergeron, children Kate Maxwell, Margie Bergeron, Corrie J. Berg-eron Jr., Andrea Bergeron Paul; Stepchildren Mollie Paddock Brown, JoAnne Paddock Hitch And John Kennedy Paddock: Grandchildren Ellis Delaney, Evan, Rachel, Zachary, and Olivia Bergeron, Kenna Drue Paul, Colleen Noelani Brown and great-grandchild Ruby Delaney. Please share your thoughts and memories at www.woodfhs. com. A personal note from Charlie Fernandez…”I had a special bond with Corrie. He was a Cajun, born in Morgan City, Louisiana, in1925. My mother was born in Patterson, Louisiana, less than 12 miles west of Morgan City on US. Hwy 90 or “The Old Spanish Trail.” So we share our Cajun heritage. Throughout my childhood we would travel from Norco to Patterson and have to go through Morgan City and across the Morgan City bridge.  He could speak fluent “Cajun” French, and I knew most of the greeting I had been taught as a child so we would always greet each other in French.  He once showed me the cover of an IBM publication where he was on the cover standing next to a bayou. The caption was, “CE to the alligators.”  I last had contact with Corrie in 1996, when he had just moved back to Farmers Branch after the death of his wife, Kathleen.  He was doing his taxes, and his PC was acting up, so he called me to come and see if I could fix it, which I did.  The obituary says he had a number of minor strokes that caused memory lost in 1997, and was no longer able to live by himself.”
